12 Summer Wardrobe Essentials

While it’s still a little chilly to hit the beach and wear summery clothes in Chicago… (I’m counting down the days!) … I’ve been taking inventory of pieces I have in my closet and browsing new styles I’d love to add this season. Today’s post is a round-up of 12 capsule wardrobe essentials for summer, at any age. The best part? They’re all versatile classics that can easily mix and match.
1 )  SANDALS  |  One of the best feelings of summer is slipping into sandals after months of winter boots, don’t you agree? Lately, I’ve been loving embellished sandals — like this pair and these fun sandals under $50. And a pair of Jack Rogers are beloved favorites of many (including Jackie O.).

2 )  BIKINI  |  Every summer, it’s fun to find a new swimsuit (or two!). I love Triangl bikinis and this classic string bikini set. If you’re more of a one-piece kind of girl, you might be happy to hear  one-pieces are very “in” this season. Wala Swim carries a great collection of one-pieces and resort wear.

3 )  COVER-UP  | And to cover-up on the beach or poolside, a tunic or shirtdress is a summer essential every girl should have in her closet. I have my eye on this cute nautical tunic, a striped linen dress and this white caftan. Don’t forget the SPF and a sun hat, too 😉

4 )  SCARF  |  Even in summer, a scarf is a good item to keep within arms reach. (Too much air-conditioning can be a deal breaker.) I love this lightweight cashmere scarf and a silk scarf that comes in lots of pretty colors, both of which could be styled and worn in a variety of ways.

5 )  SUNDRESS  |  Sundresses make getting ready in summer so streamlined and effortless. My top picks include this embroidered chambray dress, a white overlay dress and this off-the-shoulder dress.

6 )  TOTE  |  A tote is purely practical for everyday use. As much as I like to carry just the essentials in a small clutch, summer days are often spontaneous and I like to feel I can go from place to place prepared. A leather tote can carry all the essentials, plus a laptop, beach towel, and change of shoes, if need be!

7 )  SHORTS  |  Shorts can be tricky to shop for, but I’ve had luck with these pairs. Other favorites include these amazing floral print shorts and white lace shorts. Do you have a go-to brand for denim shorts? I’d love to hear your suggestions!

8 )  MAXI DRESS  |  A maxi dress is a summer must-have, in my book. This resort dress is a personal favorite, along with this floral dress and a collection that would be perfect for a summer wedding or special event.

9 )  KNITS  |  Classic knits are a no brainer, right? J.Crew always carries great basic tees and tanks in a variety of colors. And what’s a summer wardrobe without stripes? I just stocked up on this boatneck tee and navy striped shirt.

10 )  CROSSBODY  |  Especially for summer concerts and street festivals, go hands-free with a crossbody bag, like a signature Chloé or this similar style for less. I’d also recommend this metallic bag (last seen here), along with this crossbody under $30.

11 )  SUNNIES  |  Bring on the sunshine! My go-to sunglasses are by Karen Walker, Celine and these classic aviators by Ray-Ban. But when I’m on the boat or playing beach volleyball during summer, I like to have a less expensive pair I can toss in my bag and not worry about. I have a few pairs of these designer inspired sunglasses from Amazon (less than $10) that fit the bill.

12 )  HEELS  |  A blocked heel sandal is on-trend for summer 2016, which is good news for style (and comfort). I love this pair under $100, along with these luxe rockstuds and this suede pair.

Now your turn: Anything you’d add to the list? Chime in below with your personal favorites and what you’re most looking forward to this summer!
