5 Tips for Healthy Hair

One of the most frequent questions I receive is: “Where should I go for cut and color in Chicago?” When it comes to hair, it can be tricky to find someone you trust — especially in a new city or for a first visit. (Hair is such a personal thing, isn’t it?) This year, I’ve gone to Civello in Lincoln Park and came away with great experiences on both cut and color. Beyond liking how my hair looks and feels, the salon itself is beautiful and ultra accommodating. Each guest is treated to aromatherapy, plus shoulder and hand massages… it’s basically a mini-spa escape! If you visit, I see Deron for cut and Hunter for highlights. During my last visit, I asked tips for growing and maintaining healthy hair — and am happy to share with you here:
Cut frequency. | Schedule a trim every 8 weeks, especially if you highlight or curl your hair. Most people’s hair will grow about an inch in 8 weeks, but would only require a quarter inch trim, so even for someone trying to grow their hair longer, a trim every 8 weeks will keep it healthy as it grows.
Dry hair before heat tools. | To reduce heat time (and cut down on damage), gently remove as much moisture from your hair as possible prior to blowdrying. I like to towel dry my hair and let it air for about 15 or 20 minutes, then finish with a dryer and curling wand.
Don’t be afraid of oils. |  Natural oils add moisture and shine to your hair, plus they nourish the scalp and promote stronger, healthier hair. (Yes and yes!) This multi-use oil by Aveda is amazing.
Use the right products. | It’s important not to skimp on products, especially if you’re using heat tools. Even on days off from heat, quality products will help keep your locks healthy. This shampoo + conditioner, leave-in treatment and split end repair all come recommended.
Develop a relationship. | Enlisting a trusted pro is key to growing and maintaining your best hair. Beyond addressing hair needs, it’s always fun to chat new trends and styling tricks at the salon, right? I feel right at home at Civello and hope you will, too! If you visit, be sure to mention the code ‘BRIGHT&BEAUTIFUL20’ for $20 off your first time service.

  • #ad No matter my age: the holiday season always feels magical. Each year, I enjoy keeping holiday traditions and embracing new ones. 🖤 With our baby arriving now only weeks away: we’re about to embark on an entirely new adventure — and I’m so excited that this will be our first holiday season with him. Because Thanksgiving falls within two weeks of my due date, I’m thankful my immediate family is traveling to us in Chicago to celebrate this year. Which means: this is the first time I’m “hosting” the holiday! (With plenty of help, of course.) 🦃 With hosting in mind — and being 38 weeks pregnant — I wanted to plan ahead as much as possible. My hope is to create a setting that will feel festive for both Thanksgiving and Christmas, so I went with a rustic winter look that I absolutely love for the season. I’m thrilled to be partnering with a favorite brand of mine @CrateandBarrel to prepare for the holidays this year.
