Wrap Dress

Last week's visit to New Orleans was a welcome occasion to "think spring." The warmer, southern climate thankfully allowed for lighter layers — like this pretty wrap dress. I chose a dusty rose color (surprise, surprise) while the dress comes in multiple colors, all under $50 at Nordstrom.

30 Things I've Learned in 30 Years

posted on: Monday, January 29, 2018

Hi, friends! I just returned home from a trip to New Orleans. It was a whirlwind week, filled with sightseeing, wedding planning, and — my birthday! On Thursday, I turned 30. While I'm not yet used to saying that number (!)... I am truthfully excited and ready for the year ahead, along with a new decade. Over the last week, I thought of things I would tell my younger self, as well as lessons learned to help guide my future self. So here they are: 30 Things I've Learned in 30 Years (big and small)...

1) We are stronger and more resilient than we think we are.
2) Value others' talents, while knowing your own worth, too.
3) When you find a good pair of anything, buy multiples.
4) What goes around, comes around.
5) Give compliments more often.
6) Sometimes, it's really better to call rather than text.
7) It's okay to ask for help.
8) What you see on social media is someone's highlight reel.
9) Don't be afraid to be silly or spontaneous.
10) Speak up for what you believe.
11) Get out on the dance floor, no matter how 'good' you are.
12) Value experiences over things.
13) Resist comparing yourself - stay in your own lane.
14) Develop a skincare routine and stick to it.
15) Mom is usually right.
16) Know it's completely okay to say 'no.'
17) Practice gratitude and grace.
18) To have a good friend, is to be a good friend.
19) It's okay to change direction.
20) Proper grammar is an attractive trait in anyone.
21) Challenge yourself with goals, big and small.
22) Girls: keep a little mystery. The right guy will pursue YOU.
23) Don't give in to unnecessary drama or gossip.
24) There's truth to feng shui in making a house a home.
25) Fresh air and a long walk can turn a bad day around.
26) Sometimes, 'done' is better than 'perfect.'
27) Always keep learning.
28) Have an outfit that makes you feel confident.
29) While it's exciting to travel, there's no place like home.
30) A kind heart stands above all else.

Would love your thoughts! Any you particularly agree with?

QUESTION: How do you bloggers make money?
On one hand, I tend to find this question a little intrusive (well, how exactly do YOU make money and how much???). However, I do understand blogging is a fairly new and intriguing industry, one that continues to grow and attract curiosity. (And, it's truthfully a question I hear often... so I get it!) Because every blogger is different, I'll outline a few ways bloggers can monetize content.

First: sponsored posts. In this case, a brand offers a flat-rate payment in exchange for a blogger to post about a given product or service. Sponsored posts can exist solely on a blog, on Instagram, or a combination of blog/social platforms. Whenever a blogger is given money in exchange for a post, he or she must disclose the agreement with a clear statement (e.g. 'This post has been sponsored...") or include #ad, #spon, etc. according to FTC regulation.

Next: affiliate income. Most blogs and websites these days are part of an affiliate network, that offer income to a publisher for recommending a product or referring traffic to a brand's website. Some affiliates pay per click, while others pay per sale. For me personally, I'm part of an affiliate network that's based per sale. Meaning, I don't earn from clicks — rather I have an opportunity to earn a percentage of a commission of any sale that's purchased from my site and social media.

Plus: some blogs feature banner ads that can generate income, based on website traffic and/or clicks. (I currently don't have any banner ads on my site, outside of affiliate links.)

Lastly, bloggers can earn income through contributing paid content to other networks, hosting events, personal appearances and the like.

QUESTION: It's January and I'm feeling motivated to get in better shape this year. Any tips for keeping a healthy, active routine that don't cost a ton of money?
Girl, you and me both. I feel like I've slacking in that department and am working to get back on a better track. Some of my favorite inexpensive 'healthy' tips are: taking a daily shot of organic apple cider vinegar (the benefits outweigh the taste), sipping tumeric ginger tea during the day, making simple swaps (like choosing stairs over elevator), these little collagen packets (usually around $1.50 at Whole Foods), creating a fun upbeat music playlist to exercise with, and getting in a 'better than nothing workout' (i.e. 20 minutes is better than nothing!).

QUESTION: I saw on your Instagram stories awhile back a collection of mixed gold picture frames on your dresser. Can you share where you found them?
Absolutely! They're the antique brass Pressed Glass Photo Frames by Anthropologie.

QUESTION: Are you keeping any certain traditions to your wedding day? Any you'll skip?
Fun question! I'd like to include 'something old, new, borrowed, and blue.' Other traditions will come to play with our ceremony vows, music, serving cake, etc. There are also many Southern traditions specific to New Orleans we'll be adopting. And lastly: I can do without the garter and bouquet toss, if you must know ;)

One of the most fun aspects of fashion is playing to different influences. Living in a big city, I say I've definitely adopted more 'edge' to my wardrobe over the past 7+ years. While I wouldn't necessarily wear all pieces together, I love styling a leather jacket, studded details, animal print, and sky high heels on occasion. Some items in this round-up are on the luxury side, but many are total saves — like these  oversized sunglasses ($10), furry flats ($32), leather leggings ($29), and lace tank ($29). Sure, January may be the chilliest month of them all — but it's one of my favorite times of the year. First of all: January is a fresh start, in many ways. From work and wellness, to family and fitness, January takes on a sense of reflection and advancement. Second, for an entirely personal reason: January is my birthday month! This year, I'm turning one of those capstone ages... I'm headed somewhere warm(er) down south to ring in the new decade. (More on that later!) For now, this look: a head-to-toe monochromatic pairing of a long linen cardigan with faux leather leggings (under $30) accessorized with heels and a classic leather tote.

In the spirit of the new year — looking behind at months previous, and ahead to the ones to come — here are a few of my favorite posts of the past year. (And below: A round up of my personal favorite buys that became staples.) As I mentioned earlier this week, I'm over the moon for what's to come in 2018. Here's to a bright new year!
