12 Fall Fashion Essentials

posted on: Tuesday, September 29, 2015

Have you begun wearing fall styles yet? While it's still a little warm to be dressing in heavy sweaters and boots here in Chicago, I've been taking inventory of pieces I already own in my closet and browsing new styles I'd love to add to my wardrobe this fall. Today's post is a round-up of 12 fashion essentials for fall, at any age. The best part? They're all comfy, cozy classics that will last for years to come.

1.) BLANKET SCARF | Let's start with an easy one, shall we? Blanket scarves have been especially popular these past few years — they're something everyone can wear and can be styled in a variety of ways. I love this classic camel scarf, this tartan pattern, a white + plaid scarf, and this one under $20.

2.) VEST | Fall is all about layering. A vest is the perfect option to keep warm without committing to heavier outerwear, just yet. This herringbone vestquilted style and faux fur vest are all personal favorites.

3.) FLATS | When transitioning between summery sandals and winter boots, I'll opt for throwing on a pair of flats or moccasins. Minnetonka makes the best moccasins, in lots of cute colors for less than $50.

4.) PLAID | There's something about plaid that always gets me excited for cooler months. I've been browsing this collection of plaid shirts from Nordstrom and less-expensive styles at Forever 21, like this classic tartan.

5.) OVERSIZED SWEATER | An oversized sweater paired with skinnies or leggings is an effortless look, perfect for fall. I love this cashmere cardigan, this relaxed v-neck, and a tunic sweater on sale for $13.

6.) HAT | A stylish hat is a must-have fall accessory. I've got my eye on this wool hat, a panama hat and this oversized floppy hat. Here are some great tips to find the right hat for you.

7.) POLISH | Along with lip color, nail polish is a quick and easy way to update your look for a new season. I'd love to try more mauve and deep wine nail polishes to switch things up. Do you have any go-to fall shades?

8.) BOOTIES | Booties can be worn many different ways, with cuffed jeans, tucked in leggings or with a dress. My favorite pairs of fall booties are this mid-heel pair, these slip-on flat booties, and these suede heels.

9.) CLASSIC COAT | A quality, timeless coat is one of the best wardrobe investments you can make, in my opinion. I love this stadium cloth coat, trench coat, field jacket, and belted wrap coat.

10.) PONCHO | A trendier piece, but it's a good place to take a risk! Check out this camel color one, this soft cashmere poncho, a pretty fringe trim style, and this plaid poncho for $38.

11.) FAUX FUR | Whether it's a vest or scarf, a touch of faux fur adds a bit of glamour (and warmth!) to your look. Find additional styles at Nordstrom, Etsy and Anthropologie.

12.) CROSSBODY BAG | Go hands-free with a crossbody bag, like this signature Chloé or a leather crossbody under $100.

There you have it! Any fall fashion essentials or favorites you'd add to the list?

If you follow me on Instagram, you'll catch little glimpses of daily life and happenings around the blog and in Chicago. But, if I'm being totally honest here: As much as I love the platform for creative imagery and connecting with others, it does make me a little sad some things get lost on Instagram. I'm sure some of you can relate... a lot of life happens outside of what's shared on social media, for better or for worse! So, I thought I'd share a few additional snapshots of places, people and memories that've made me smile these past months. They include countless concerts, days on the lake, trips home to Wisconsin to visit my parents, seeing my niece grow to be the cutest little toddler, late night fun with friends, exploring the city, baseball games, biking, paddleboarding and golfing, weekends with extended family, attending beautiful weddings and celebrations, and much much more. Sure, Instagram is a pretty place, but I also love looking back through these less-than-perfect photos to remember moments that bring me such joy. I hope you enjoy seeing them, too!

Decorating for Fall

While I admit it doesn't quite feel like fall yet — we've been having a warm sunny week! —I have been making small updates around home for the new season. Easy things, like swapping lightweight throws for heavier blankets, replacing summery candles with fall scents, hanging new kitchen towels, and picking up a few white pumpkins at our local market to put on display. Are you decorating your home for fall? Any ways you like to update your space for a new season? Here are a few fall décor items I'd love to incorporate at home as we welcome autumn:

Autumn

Farewell, sweet summer. Today marks the first day of fall. Are you ready for the new season? Personally speaking, I'm excited for the change. I came across a quote: "Autumn...the year's last, loveliest smile." Isn't that a nice sentiment? While summer is always a celebrated time, there's something special about fall. Perhaps because it's so short — especially in the Midwest! — I love treasuring these beautiful and crisp days. I'm working on lots of fun projects and posts to share with you throughout the season, including fall outfits, beauty, décor, and maybe a recipe (or two!) in between. Stay tuned!

Orange is a color I rarely wear... but I'm warming up to it lately! I think the color is so chic when paired with white, and touches of black and gold. I've had my eye on this J.Crew sweater since it hit stores earlier this summer (ahem), but waited for it to come down in price. It's now 60% off and comes in 4 additional colors. Do you have any colors you're drawn to and would like to wear more frequently?
